Munich Glockenspiel

Just like Prague has its Astronomical Clock Munich has the Glockenspiel.

Sitting high up on the New Town Hall the Glockenspiel tells two stories as its many bells, chimes and life size characters perform. The first is the marriage of Duke Wilhelm V (founder of the Hofbräuhaus) to Renata of Lorraine complete with jousting knights.

The second story represents the dance that the first people to venture back into the streets of Munich performed to show it was safe to come out of hiding after the great plague in the 16th century.

The 11am show runs everyday all year round with extra shows run during the summer months. As the show runs for over 3 minutes its a nice old strain on the neck and hands if your filming it like I did. If you find yourself in Munich I think you would be crazy to miss it and the crowds that gather.

Aww, I remember seeing this 3.5 years ago! Can’t believe it’s been that long. Thanks for the reminder 🙂

Yeah, I don’t recall staying the whole time 😉 But a big crowd certainly gathered.
