Vegemite VS Never Ending Footsteps

It’s been a hard run for the old Vegemite Challenge. People are either un-willing to take it on or the participants that do have a go end up leaving me with a less than positive outcome. Even my attempt to show everyone that Vegemite is awesome failed to unite the masses in a wave of crazy Vegemite awesomeness.

So after a bit of a break I was excited that Lauren from neverendingfootsteps.com said she would take on the challenge for me. After all the British have their own poor substitute for the black stuff and seem to get just as excited about it. She had even agreed to take a spoonful right out of the jar (high five) but I’d suggested trying a standard piece of toast first to ease into it.

I won’t give away the outcome now, but I will say that the first Vegemite Challenge video back will not disappoint.

Having asked some of my fellow travel blogging friends to step up and taste vegemite for me I figured it was time that I proved just how easy it is to eat. So after watching Suzy Guese take on my challenge I just had to set things right and prove that it doesn’t taste like insects. Watch on and see just how tasty vegemite is.

Vegemite vs Suzy

That’s right folks its about time I made someone else suffer enjoy the wonderful taste of VEGEMITE. So while I was in Florence (yes you’ll hear about that soon enough) I got to meet the wonderful Suzy Guese and hang out with her for a few days.

Along with the joys of eating pizza and enjoying some wonderful gelato in Italy I opened Suzy’s eyes to the beautiful breakfast spread that is Vegemite.

Vegemite vs Nomadic Chick

Vegemite really seems to be taking off in the travel world as this week I have another attempt on the good stuff. This time its Jeannie of Nomadic Chick fame that has taken on the Vegemite challenge.

She wrote about it on her blog but I’ve included the video here for you as well.

As you can see its not just Australians that enjoy vegemite and I really don’t think I could sell it any better than Jeannie does. Everybody should take note because at some stage I’m going to meet you and there will be no escaping this great challenge.

Vegemite vs Stephanie

Another of my fellow travel bloggers has finally stepped up to the plate and tried the vegemite I posted off to them before leaving Australia. This time its Stephanie from www.twenty-somethingtravel.com… who battled the vegemite monster. Want to know what she thought? well hit the play button below.

The outcome… its not good but its not bad. I think I’m claiming that one as a win for Vegemite, and hey if Stephanie thinks it taste’s like whiskey how can it not be a win.

I do love how everybody is dragging their friends in to try the vegemite with them. It’s just further enhancing my chances of spreading vegemite across the world and cementing its place next to the peanut butter on the shelf.

Vegemite vs Candice

Before I departed Australia for my journey to Europe I sent off some lovely care packages of vegemite to some friends abroad. I had high hopes for my friends to really embrace the experience and found myself eagerly waiting for them to try it.

One friend was Candice from www.candicedoestheworld.com who was nice enough to make up a video of the experience for everyone.

You can find the post she wrote about it over on her blog and I have included the video here for everyone’s viewing pleasure. But enough of the waiting lets see what Candice thought of my favourite spread.

Right… while I’m not so found of the baby poo reference I will give her top marks for spreading it so thick and surviving. Like other new vegemite consumers you need to remember not to spread it like you would your peanut butter or jam. Also it won’t spread like them either, so just spread a thin layer across the toast as best you can and tuck in.

It would appear I have lost this battle but I will continue my journey to spread vegemite across the lands. If only my lovely hostel friends weren’t so camera shy…

Vegemite vs Brooke’s Parents

The other week Brooke from brookevstheworld.com had her parents down in Australia for a visit. Along with the usual Sydney sights she told me at some stage vegemite would be brought up, so naturally I was eager to find out the verdict.

What I wasn’t expecting was this blog post that featured the blow by blow account of their Vegemite encounter.

After watching the video I had learn’t two things, Americans need better sewage systems if they are still using carts to move the stuff around and the second was that Brooke’s mum is awesome.

With just over 2 weeks till I make for Europe I’m looking forward to spreading Vegemite across the palate of a few travellers and getting their verdict. Have you tried Vegemite? Three Steps To Perfect Vegemite Toast

Recently Cailin from travelyourself.ca was in Australia and while I didn’t get a visit from her she did try Vegemite so I’m willing to let that slide for now. Unfortunately the experience wasn’t up to my satisfaction so I’m going to lay out some steps on eating Vegemite so that you can all love it like I do.

First up lets check out Cailin and her attempt.

Now I’d be happy with half a piece of Vegemite toast but two bites Cailin, I know you can do better than that. So to help improve everybody’s Vegemite eating skills here are my 3 steps to ensure a successful encounter.

Step #1

For the ultimate experience you want to start with toast that’s nice and hot straight from the toaster.

Step #2

With your hot toast ready to go spread some butter/margarine across quickly so as allow the toast to melt it, thus further enhancing the toast in preparation for the Vegemite. Opinions will differ on the amount to use, personally I don’t mind a liberal spreading across the toast.

Step #3

Next we come to the Vegemite. Now Vegemite is not your average run of the mill spread like Peanut Butter or Jam. You have to sample it like a fine wine and not like the $2 bottle of hooch you drank as a young teenager.

When your spreading it across your toast your looking to have a nice fine layer that you can see through. Once your a regular fan you can experiment with thicker layers, but for a beginner this is perfect.

The volume of Vegemite Cailin was using is better left to a more seasoned fan or typical Australian palate. By assaulting your mouth with that much awesomeness in one go is just asking for trouble. A beginner just isn’t prepared for it and the result is as you can see a failure.

I hope now that you have the recipe to the perfect slice of Vegemite toast you can spread the word (look I said it again, you know with the spread and how Vegemite is a spread and oh fine just forget it) and all get behind my Vegemite vs The World challenge.

Vegemite vs The World

Stick a slice of Vegemite toast in the hand of an Australian and they will swallow it in seconds. Hand it to pretty much anybody else and you can expect a facial expression that would suggest they just ate the nastiest thing on earth.

Australian’s love their Vegemite and will defend its honour feverishly. It’s a quintessential Aussie icon, and you would be hard pressed to not find a jar of it in the pantry of every Australian household. I would even go as far as to say you couldn’t call yourself a real Aussie unless you can handle some on your toast every morning.

Invented way back in 1923 (it has to be good to survive this long) and made from used brewers yeast extract (cmon its made from the same stuff used to make beer people) it has a salty, slightly bitter and malty taste. Containing the world’s richest known sources of B vitamins, it was even recommended as essential for infant welfare.

Now if it was good for infants then its bloody well good for everybody else so I have taken up the challenge to spread (did you see what I just did, I said spread because.. oh forget it you can work it out) the word. When I set off for Europe this year I will be taking a jar of Vegemite with me and getting you all to try it. Now don’t look at me like that and dude I can totally see you screwing your face up already.

With a camera (that I don’t have yet) we shall film this great challenge so that you can all see that its really not that bad. Oh and there won’t be any of this “oh no none for me thanks” you hear me twitter friends this means you too. For now prepare yourselves because the VEGEMITE IS COMING.
